Student newsroom covering ONA10

Students from around the country will cover this year’s ONA conference Thursday through Saturday in Washington.

The newsroom, underwritten by a grant from Google, will be staffed by 20 students and as many mentors, professors and professionals representing a wide swath of organizations.

This year’s graduate and undergraduate journalism students represent more than a dozen universities across the nation. They will be writing news and features as well as shooting video, recording audio and taking photos.

The competition for the limited number of student slots was tougher than ever, as ONA received more than 50 applications. Newsroom co-chairs Sara Kelly of National University in San Diego and Lynne Perri from American University in Washington will be on site throughout the three-day event, working out of two Renaissance Hotel conference rooms with equipment loaned from USA TODAY and American University.

Newsroom staffers will provide multimedia coverage of conference events, along with additional stories and packages that will showcase their creativity and commitment to online journalism. Conference coverage will culminate in the announcement of the winners of the annual Online Journalism Awards on Saturday night.
