{"id":1575,"date":"2010-10-29T19:37:32","date_gmt":"2010-10-29T19:37:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/conference.journalists.org\/2010conference\/?p=1575"},"modified":"2010-10-29T19:37:32","modified_gmt":"2010-10-29T19:37:32","slug":"documentcloud-cheers-past-success-looks-to-future-fixes-new-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ona10.journalists.org\/2010\/10\/29\/documentcloud-cheers-past-success-looks-to-future-fixes-new-features\/","title":{"rendered":"DocumentCloud looks ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The developers of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\">DocumentCloud<\/a>, an application that manages and annotates primary source documents, spoke Friday at an ONA10 conference session of the progress the nonprofit has made in its first year.<\/p>\n<p>DocumentCloud was founded in 2009, when a group of online journalists felt newspapers were doing a poor job of making public the documents they use in reporting. That year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newschallenge.org\/winner\/2009\/documentcloud\">it won a $719,500 Knight News Challenge grant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really important to, you know\u2014like you did in your algebra class as a kid\u2014show your work,&#8221; said Aron Pilhofer, editor of interactive news technologies at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/\">The New York Times<\/a> and a DocumentCloud co-founder.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, major news organizations like The Times, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\">The Washington Post<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\">Chicago Tribune<\/a> have all used DocumentCloud.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Hickman, DocumentCloud\u2019s program director, highlighted some of her favorite implementations of the application on a number of websites, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commercialappeal.com\/withers-exposed\/\">The (Memphis, Tenn.)
